Some people are simply naturally gifted. Blessed by the gods, coming from a long line of psychics, or simply in possession of dumb luck – they seem to nail it every time. Whatever prediction comes pouring out, it always comes true.
So what about the rest? What about those who simply can’t get the hang of it, no matter how hard they try?
I must admit that I was intuitively challenged. In fact, I still feel that way, even after over a decade of professional experience. I don’t fall into a trance or have prophetic visions. It was never easy. I had to work for it.
However, reading Tarot, the Runes, or indeed any other divination system is yet another example where working hard doesn’t always give results. The more you push it, the less likely it is to happen. Instead, you have to work smart.
The trick? Just go for it. Don’t take it too seriously. Play with it!
Let’s say you want to give the Lenormand Grand Tableau a try. For a beginner, sometimes, the best way to go about it is to start in the upper left corner and keep going. Simplistic as it may seem, it’s an excellent way to get over your fear, loosen up, and just read. As you keep going, cards will start forming sentences – some short, some a bit longer – and tell you a story.
The quicker you do it, the less chance your rational mind will have of catching up. This sort of fast-paced, free-form, stream-of-consciousness-type reading will help you overcome the blockages you may have and set you on your way to proficiency.
The key is to approach divination in the spirit of play. After all, oracles are sacred games and play frees us from the effort of learning.
Remember your childhood? Remember how you simply used to absorb knowledge without even trying? You still have it in you. If it helps, practice reading in funny and weird contexts. Pull some cards for your favorite fictional character. Invent scenarios. Make it quick, easy, and fun.
The goal is to turn what can often feel like a rather solemn pursuit into oracular play. Chances are you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the results.
